ABOUT TASH SULTANA

Australian singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, music producer, and engineer Tash Sultana grew up in a musical household in Melbourne and began playing guitar at the age of three, after being gifted one by her grandfather. An accomplished musician, Sultana plays a wide variety of instruments, including piano, keyboard, synth, bass, drums/percussion, beat making/sampling, beatboxing, trumpet, saxophone, flute, mandolin, oud, harmonica, lap steel, and panpipes. They layer these instruments, along with percussive and finger-tapping style guitar playing, via a loop station, creating a "one-person band". Sultana has a vocal range stretching 5 octaves.

CAREER

2008-2016: Beginnings, "Jungle", and home busking videos

Sultana began performing at open mic nights in Victoria from the age of 13, sometimes up to six nights a week. They fronted the band Mindpilot with Patrick O'Brien, Emily Daye, and David Herbert from 2008 to 2012, when the band split. The group was hugely popular locally, winning several Battle of the Bands competitions in Melbourne. In 2013, Sultana released their debut EP, Yin Yang.

In 2016, Sultana shared a video on social media of their song "Jungle". The video amassed over one million views within five days and has since been viewed over 40 million times. After their viral success, they went on to win Triple J's 2016 J Award for Unearthed Artist of the Year and had two tracks voted into the Triple J Hottest 100, 2016: "Jungle" (No. 3) and "Notion" (No. 32). That July, they signed a management deal with Lemon Tree Music. In September, they released the EP Notion through their own label, Lonely Lands Records. The EP was certified gold in Australia, reaching number eight on the Australian Albums Chart, and also charted in Holland and Switzerland.

2016-2017: Debut world tour and singles

In 2017, Sultana announced a world tour, including hundreds of live performances across Australia, Europe, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. That April, they released the single "Murder to the Mind", which reached number 59 on the ARIA Singles Chart and has been certified gold. On 25 July 2017, Sultana announced the Australian Homecoming Tour with support from Pierce Brothers and Willow Beats.

That October, they announced the premiere of a new single "Mystik" on Triple J and also made their US late-night television debut on Late Night with Seth Meyers, performing "Jungle". At the 2017 ARIA Awards ceremony, they were nominated for four ARIA Awards: Breakthrough Artist, Best Independent Release, Best Blues and Roots Album, and Best Australian Live Act.

2018-2019: Flow State

On June 22, 2018, Sultana released a new single, "Salvation". Flow State, their debut album, was released on August 31, 2018. It debuted at number two on the Australian Albums chart and charted in several countries across the world, including the US where it reached number 51 on the Billboard 200, number 5 on the Top Rock Albums chart, and number 4 on the Top Alternative Albums chart. The album includes the singles  "Mystik", "Murder To The Mind", "Harvest Love" and "Free Mind".

In February 2019, Sultana headed out on their biggest tour yet, including sold-out shows at Melbourne's Sidney Myer Music Bowl, and Brisbane's Riverstage. In April, they released the stand-alone single "Can't Buy Happiness". This was followed by "Talk It Out", featuring Australian singer Matt Corby, and "Daydreaming", a collaboration with Milky Chance.

2020-present: Terra Firma

In February 2020, Sultana played Melbourne's Sidney Myer Music Bowl as part of the one-day fundraising music festival Down To Earth, raising funds for bushfire relief, following Australia's Black Summer bushfires. The event included performances by Gang of Youths, Angus & Julia Stone, and more.

On April 9, they released the single "Pretty Lady" and its accompanying video was released later that month. Their next single, "Greed", was released on June 20, 2020. This was followed by a third single, "Beyond The Pine" in September, and a fourth single "Willow Tree" in October, featuring Australian rapper Jerome Farah. The fifth single from Sultana’s upcoming album, "Sweet & Dandy", was released on January 22, 2021.

Terra Firma, Sultana’s second studio album, was released on February 19, 2021. It was recorded, engineered, performed, arranged, and produced entirely by Sultana. As with Flow State, Terra Firma charted in several countries around the world. It reached number one on the Australian Albums Chart and hit the top ten in both Germany and Switzerland.

In support of Terra Firma, they announced a tour of the UK and Europe, as well as a two-month tour of North America and a one-off performance at Colorado's Red Rocks Amphitheatre, which sold 10,000 tickets within five minutes.

On 18 February 2022, Sultana released "Coma". The song is the lead single from MTV Unplugged, Live in Melbourne album, released in May 2022.
