The American singer-songwriter and pianist Norah Jones was born on March 30, 1979, as Geethali Norah Jones Shankar.

She has sold over 50 million records globally as of 2023, having won multiple honors for her work. Billboard rated her the best jazz musician of the 2000s decade. She was placed 60th on Billboard magazine's artists of the 2000s decade chart, and she has nine Grammy Awards to her credit.

Jones began her solo career in 2002 with the publication of Come Away with Me, a jazz, country, blues, folk, and pop fusion album. Over 27 million copies of the certified diamond album were sold. The album brought Jones five Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year, Album of the Year, and Best New Artist. She became the first Indian-American of South Asian descent to win that many Grammy Awards.

Her next three studio albums, Feels Like Home (2004), Not Too Late (2007), and The Fall (2009), all went platinum and sold over a million copies each. Little Broken Hearts, Jones's fifth studio album, was released on April 27, 2012; Day Breaks, her sixth studio album, was released on October 7, 2016. Pick Me Up Off the Floor, her seventh studio album, was released on June 12, 2020.

Jones starred in her first feature film as an actress, My Blueberry Nights, directed by Wong Kar-Wai and released in 2007.

2010 saw Jones contribute "World of Trouble" to the Raise Hope for Congo compilation by Downtown Records and Enough Project. The compilation's earnings go toward supporting initiatives that prioritize the safety and emancipation of women in the Congo and encourage people elsewhere to speak out in favor of peace in the region.

In 2010 too, Jones also published a compilation album titled...Featuring, which is an album of her collaborations with Foo Fighters, Willie Nelson, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Outkast, Q-Tip, Talib Kweli, Belle and Sebastian, Ray Charles, Ryan Adams, Dolly Parton, Herbie Hancock, M. Ward, and other well-known musicians. She said, "It's so exciting and flattering and fun when I get asked to sing with somebody that I admire.... It takes you a little bit out of your comfort zone when you're doing something with another artist. You don't know what to expect—it's kind of like being a little kid and having a playdate."
