Inspired by David Bowie’s bigger than life fame, Portugal. The Man wanted to have a bigger than life presence in the music industry without naming their band after one of their members. Guitar player and vocalist John Gourley said, “A country is a group of people. With Portugal, it just ended up being the first country that came to mind. The band’s name is ‘Portugal.’ The period is stating that, and ‘The Man’ states that it’s just one person.” On a more personal note, “Portugal. The Man” was also going to be the book title that Gourley planned to write about his father.

It's not just the band’s unique name that paved their way to fame. Their music has its own vibe that pulls in more and more fans. Hitting the number 1 spot on the Billboard Alternative Songs, Hot 100 Airplay, and Pop Songs charts as well as a Top 5 spot on the Billboard Hot 100, "Feel It Still" remains to be their biggest hit to date. The song also won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards and went on to win Alternative Rock Song of the Year at the 2018 iHeartRadio Music Awards. In April 2018, the band also took home the ASCAP Vanguard Award at the ASCAP Pop Music Awards.
